Classic History
Horse shows have been a part of life in Moore County, and Pinehurst especially, since the village was founded in the 1890s. Well into the early 20th century, guests at the Carolina Resort used horses for transportation, but also rode for pleasure, on trail rides, and for hunting and racing. They loved to show off their animals, of course, both riding and driving. Even when the automobile had taken over the task of moving people from place to place, the horse and carriage remained a symbol of elegance and competence, a demonstration of the ultimate cooperation between human and horse.
In 1992, a committee of dedicated horse people decided to recreate the grace of a bygone era by hosting a pleasure driving show for Moore County.
2015 marks the 21st anniversary of the Carriage Classic in the Pines and the 100th birthday of the Pinehurst Harness Track! We seek to honor the past, but also to promote the future of carriage driving and pleasure shows. Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you in Pinehurst in May!
